At the weekend Leeds once again took centre stage for another great sporting event, this time – the ITU World Triathlon Series. The series features the world’s best triathletes rounds i all over the world including Cape Town, Stockholm and Abu Dhabi competing for points to qualify to the Olympics. Leeds the best city in the north was lucky enough to be chosen to host the UK based series and it’s safe to say the whole city came out in full force to support! Despite the typical British weather….
We had a great view of all the action in the city centre where we saw both the men and women complete 7 laps of cycling and 4 laps of running after their swim in Roundhay Park. Spectators lined the streets supporting the athletes and its safe to say everyone knew when a member of Team GB was approaching with the roar of cheers – especially the local Brownlee brothers who gained 1st and 2nd place on the podiums. It was also fantastic to finally see Non Stanford (Team GB) in action after meeting her a few months ago at a Women in Sport event which you can read about here.
In addition to the elite race, amateur competitors took part in various races across the weekend including Go Tri events which are aimed at encouraging people to try the sport with courses specifically designed for beginners – so if you’re interested I’d definitely take a look.
After the amazing success of the Grand Depart in 2014 its great to see more spectacular sporting events happening in Leeds with both elite athletes and amateurs. I feel extremely lucky that is is all happening on my doorstep. Hopefully in some way shape or form people felt inspired, I know I for one definitely did.
